Beginner ballet
First position
Most studios ask for the same three things on day one: a plain camisole leotard, pink or skin-tone tights and soft slippers. Start simple and let the dress code decide colours.
Fitter’s noteSew the elastics only after your teacher has checked how the slippers sit on your foot.
Pre-pointe & pointe
Going en pointe
Your first pair should be fitted in person and signed off by your teacher. What you can prepare at home is everything around the shoe: padding, toe protection and something to keep calves warm.

Jazz, tap & contemporary
Jazz & tap night
Jazz and tap classes move faster and hit the floor harder. Look for split soles that flex through the arch, taps that are already mounted and layers you can peel off between combinations.
Fitter’s noteCheck the tap screws after the first few classes; new plates often loosen slightly as the sole settles.
Stage & exams
Recital week
Stage lights are unforgiving: tights should match across the cast, leotards should hold their shape under a costume and the bag should keep shoes, pins and spares in one place.
